2016 Hyundai Sonata Hybrid Delivers Increased Fuel Economy, Sophisticated Design

Revised Transmission, More Powerful Electric Motor and Larger Lithium-Polymer Battery Pack Improve Fuel Economy

FOUNTAIN VALLEY, Calif. May 18, 2015Hyundai rolled out its award-winning second-generation Sonata Hybrid with media drive opportunities today. Sonata Hybrid continues to visually differentiate itself from other Sonata models with purposefully unique wheels and front and rear fascia that improve aerodynamics while highlighting Sonata Hybrid’s advanced technology and efficiency. The 2016 Sonata Hybrid SE model estimated combined fuel economy of 42 mpg is a ten percent improvement over the previous model. Sonata Hybrid will be built at Hyundai’s Asan, South Korea assembly plant and will go on sale this summer.

2016 Hyundai Sonata Hybrid Delivers Increased Fuel Economy

POWERTRAIN
The heart of the 2016 Sonata Hybrid is the downsized 2.0-liter Nu GDI four-cylinder engine coupled with a six-speed automatic transmission that houses a more powerful 38 kW electric motor and clutch where the torque converter would normally be found. Sonata Hybrid’s Transmission-Mounted Electrical Device (TMED) delivers the same responsive, engaging driving characteristics Sonata owners expect while improving fuel economy through the use of the larger electric motor.

This innovative transmission has been upgraded significantly since its introduction with the original Sonata Hybrid and now uses an electric oil pump, which helps improve efficiency. It is possible for Sonata Hybrid to operate solely on electric power at speeds up to 75 mph by decoupling the gasoline engine from the rest of the drivetrain.

Sonata Hybrid’s Nu engine produces 154 horsepower and 140 lb. ft. of torque. The electric motor produces 38 kW (51 horsepower) and 151 lb. ft. of torque. Hybrid system net power is 193 horsepower at 6,000 rpm. Sonata Hybrid SE is expected to achieve an estimated 40 mpg in the city, 44 mpg on the highway and have a combined EPA rating of 42 mpg, which is more than a ten percent improvement from the 2015 model.

The lithium-polymer battery pack capacity is 1.62 kWh, a 13 percent improvement, and the battery pack now fits under the trunk floor, which allows for a flat trunk floor as well as available 60/40 split-folding rear seats. 2016 Sonata Hybrid offers best-in-class cargo volume at 13.3 cu. ft., a 10 percent improvement over the previous Sonata Hybrid, thanks to the compact battery pack dimensions and efficient design. Locating the battery pack beneath the trunk floor gives Sonata Hybrid best-in-class passenger volume at 106.1 cu. ft.

DESIGN
The award-winning design of the latest Sonata is enhanced by a series of functional changes to the front and rear fascia for the 2016 Sonata Hybrid that highlight its efficiency and the advanced technology below the surface. These visual changes also lower the coefficient of drag to an exceptionally low 0.24; the lowest in its class and identical to the Tesla Model S. Visual changes to the Hybrid’s exterior include a unique larger grille, front and rear bumpers, front fenders, front and rear lights, chrome side sill moldings, Hybrid badging and new eco-spoke alloy wheel designs. A distinctive instrument cluster with a 4.2-inch color LCD multi-purpose display provides Hybrid drivers with additional information about the hybrid system’s operation.

Sonata Hybrid will offer two exclusive exterior paint options: Graphite Blue Pearl and Seaport Mist. Interior color choices include gray and beige in cloth or leather seating configurations and an all-new Blue Pearl option for leather seats. Sonata Hybrids equipped with Blue Pearl leather seats will include contrast stitching and trim accent pieces.

SAFETY FEATURES
2016 Sonata Hybrid comes standard with seven airbags, including a new driver’s knee airbag. Electronic Stability Control, Vehicle Stability Management, Traction Control, ABS and a Tire Pressure Monitoring System with individual tire pressure display and a rearview camera are also standard. Projector headlamps are standard while HID headlamps are available.

Hyundai engineers implemented many active safety technologies for the 2016 Sonata Hybrid to assist drivers and help prevent accidents. No longer reserved for luxury cars, advanced safety technologies such as Forward Collision Warning, Blind Spot Detection with Rear Cross Traffic Alert, Lane Change Assist and a Lane Departure Warning System are all available in this midsize sedan.

Sonata Hybrid’s advanced Blind Spot Detection system is designed to alert drivers of an approaching vehicle in the next lane if the turn signal is activated. This Lane Change Assist technology is a segment-exclusive active safety feature. Drivers are first alerted of a vehicle in the blind spot by warning lights in the side mirrors. When the turn signal is activated, the Lane Change Assist system determines the closing speed of any vehicle in the adjacent lane to determine if the lane change is safe. If the system determines the vehicle in the other lane is closing too quickly, it sounds an audible alarm to warn the driver that the lane change is unsafe. The Lane Departure Warning System uses a forward-facing camera to recognize lane markers. If the system detects the vehicle is headed outside the lane markers, a warning on the instrument cluster illuminates and an audible sound alerts the driver.

Rear Cross-traffic Alert (RCTA) is another feature derived from the 2016 Sonata Hybrid’s advanced Blind Spot Detection system. RCTA scans the areas to each side of the Sonata Hybrid when drivers are backing out of parking spaces. If the system detects another vehicle is approaching from the side, the Sonata driver is given an audible alert. This system is another tool that helps Sonata drivers utilizes the active safety technology.

CONVENIENT TECHNOLOGY
The 2016 Sonata Hybrid delivers the convenient technology one would expect in a luxury vehicle in an incredibly efficient mid-size hybrid sedan. Hyundai’s hands-free Smart Trunk is now available on the Hybrid as well as an electronic parking brake with automatic vehicle hold, a driver memory seat, rear window sunshades, heated steering wheel, LED interior lights, ventilated front seats, power front seats with 4-way adjustable driver lumbar and Smart Cruise Control featuring full stop capability.

MULTIMEDIA
All 2016 Sonata Hybrids come standard with iPod®/USB and auxiliary input jacks, SiriusXM® satellite radio and Bluetooth® phone connectivity with phonebook transfer and voice-recognition. Available upgrades include an 8.0-inch navigation system with downloadable apps, HD radio and Infinity premium audio system with next-generation Blue Link® telematics.

Switching to a preset station in the middle of your favorite song won’t be an annoyance any longer. Rewind up to 22 minutes to listen to the full song or catch up on a sports broadcast. SiriusXM Travel Link® provides access to traffic information, sports scores, weather, stock prices, fuel prices and local movie times. All 2016 Sonata Hybrids equipped with navigation will also support Pandora® and SoundHound applications as well as “Eyes Free” Siri integration, which allow drivers to perform a variety of functions without taking their eyes off the road. Apple CarPlay and Google Android Auto will take smartphone integration to the next level on the Sonata Hybrid later this year.

FLUIDIC SCULPTURE DESIGN LANGUAGE

Fluidic Sculpture is the consistent, cohesive design language used throughout the entire Hyundai showroom. It gives the Sonata Hybrid an upscale appearance along with aerodynamics that helps reduce wind noise and improve fuel economy. The unique front fascia and rear bumper with LED accent headlights and LED taillights boost the flowing lines and integrate a new level of design precision. The fluid and precise exterior theme is completed by a set of 17-inch eco-spoke wheels on the Sonata Hybrid Limited.

LITHIUM-POLYMER BATTERY TECHNOLOGY

The 2014 Sonata Hybrid features a lithium-polymer battery pack, which has been established as the next generation of lithium-ion technology, and is ideally suited to automotive applications thanks to a particularly robust and reliable chemistry.

The lithium-polymer cells, developed with Hyundai’s partner LG Chem, use a manganese-spinel chemistry that provides an excellent compromise between power delivery, energy density and thermal stability. Thermal stability is critical to ensuring durability, effectively eliminating the need to replace the battery pack during the normal lifespan of the vehicle. The electrodes in older lithium-ion chemistries expand and contract significantly with the heating and cooling that naturally occur during charging and discharging. This thermal expansion causes cracks in the electrodes, which ultimately reduces the cell’s ability to hold a charge. Manganese-spinel lithium-polymer cells have much lower expansion rates and are thus able to go through tens-of-thousands of charge cycles even without having to use a heavier, liquid-cooling system.

LITHIUM POLYMER BATTERY PACK

The 2014 Sonata Hybrid’s 47 kW lithium polymer battery pack is more energy dense than the nickel-metal hydride batteries used in competitors’ hybrid vehicles. At 91 pounds, the lightweight battery helps improve overall vehicle weight and fuel economy. The improved battery pack is key to recovering more kinetic energy from braking and charging from the engine, when needed, to help propel the vehicle. The optimized hybrid system allows more all-electric driving with additional usable energy stored in the battery, cutting both fuel consumption and emissions.

POWERFUL OUTPUT ELECTRIC MOTOR

The 2014 Sonata Hybrid’s lithium polymer battery stores more energy, yielding a powerful output of 35 kW to the electric traction motor. The higher output electric motor is also essential to improving energy capture during regenerative braking. The regenerative energy is used for electric drive mode before the system has to start the internal combustion engine, sustaining a longer all-electric driving mode for continued fuel efficiency and improved drivability.

HYBRID STARTER GENERATOR

HSG is primarily used to start the engine and charge the hybrid battery. The HSG operates at the same 270 volts as the electric traction motor and battery and is also used to improve clutch engagement when synchronizing engine to transmission speed. The primary traction motor is coupled to the transmission and cannot be used to charge the hybrid battery when the car is stationary. If the battery state of charge is low and the car is stationary, the HSG will automatically restart the engine, which then charges the Lithium Polymer battery pack.

When the driver releases the brake and presses the accelerator, the Sonata Hybrid will pull away smoothly in electric drive mode with the clutch still disengaged. In this mode, the Sonata will briefly behave like an electric vehicle. Once the car is in motion and torque demand increases, the clutch will engage and send engine tractive effort through the transmission again, which enables the vehicle to achieve exceptionally smooth starts.

AERODYNAMICS

The body of the 2014 Sonata Hybrid remains unchanged, but it still features the unique exterior that sets it apart from other Sonatas. The combination of a re-shaped front and rear fascias with a deeper air dam, extended rocker panels and lower drag wheels allow air to flow around the body with less resistance. The drag coefficient for the Sonata Hybrid is an exceptionally low 0.25 that compares favorably to the Toyota Camry Hybrid (0.27) and the Ford Fusion Hybrid (0.27).

The ability to easily slip through the air, combined with low rolling resistance tires and the reduced friction in the optimized Hybrid Blue Drive powertrain, significantly reduces the amount of energy required to maintain highway speeds. The result is the remarkable highway fuel efficiency of the Sonata Hybrid.

Increasing electric only driving

Maximizing electric-only driving results in higher fuel efficiency, which is the leading factor car buyers look for in a hybrid vehicle. Hyundai engineers aimed to increase the overall amount of available electrical drive power and improve the efficiency of the Hybrid Blue Drive operating system in the 2013 Sonata Hybrid.

Using a higher output 35 kW electric motor and the more powerful 47 kW Lithium Polymer battery pack, the Hybrid Blue Drive powertrain maximizes electric-only driving. The improved operating system takes advantage of newly developed driving pattern detection and engine on/off optimization logic. The availability of more battery energy allows for greater flexibility in running the gasoline engine at optimum efficiency, which saves fuel. Better kinetic energy recovery and increased charging efficiency powers the Sonata Hybrid in all-electric mode more often and for longer periods of time, increasing fuel economy.

The 2013 Sonata Hybrid utilizes the all-electric mode at optimal moments such as highway driving, then saves the gasoline engine start-up for roads that require a heavier dose of power. All of this translates to money saved for the driver.

KEY IMPROVEMENTS FOR INCREASED FUEL EFFICIENCY LITHIUM POLYMER BATTERY PACK

The remarkable achievement with 2013 Sonata Hybrid’s 47 kW lithium polymer battery pack is that not only is it more powerful and more energy dense, but also weighs less and takes up less volume in the trunk. The weight of the pack has gone from 96 pounds to 91 pounds, while trunk volume has increased from 10.7 cu. ft. to 12.1 cu. ft. Once again, the improved efficiency of the battery pack is key to recovering more kinetic energy from braking and charging from the engine, when needed, to help propel the vehicle. The newly optimized system allows the battery to store more usable energy, allowing more all-electric driving, cutting both fuel consumption and emissions.

HIGHER OUTPUT ELECTRIC MOTOR

As the upgraded battery stores more energy, engineers also increased the output on the electric traction motor from 30 kW to 35 kW. The increased energy pulled into the system is used for higher torque output in electric drive mode before the system has to start the internal combustion engine. The 2013 Sonata Hybrid can now sustain all-electric mode longer than the previous system. These changes deliver both improved fuel economy and drivability. The higher output electric motor is also essential to improving energy capture during regenerative braking.

HYBRID STARTER GENERATOR

The HSG is primarily used to improve clutch engagement when synchronizing engine to transmission speed.

In this mode, the Sonata will briefly behave like a series hybrid. Once the car is in motion and torque demand increases, the clutch will engage and send engine tractive effort through the transmission again.

DRIVEABILITY IMPROVEMENTS

In addition to improving efficiency, Hyundai engineers set their sights on improving drivability with the following:

•Improved hybrid system clutch control

•Improved vehicle response by throttle tuning

•Optimized regenerative braking shift pattern

•Decreased friction in the compact six-speed automatic transmission

AERODYNAMICS

The body of the 2013 Sonata Hybrid remains unchanged, but it still features the unique exterior that sets it apart from other Sonatas. The combination of a re-shaped front and rear fascias with a deeper air dam, extended rocker panels and lower drag wheels allow air to flow around the body with less resistance. The drag coefficient for the Sonata Hybrid is an exceptionally low 0.24 that compares favorably to the Porsche 911 GT2 RS (0.34) and the Nissan GT-R (0.27).

The ability to easily slip through the air, combined with low rolling resistance tires and the reduced friction in the newly optimized Hybrid Blue Drive powertrain, significantly reduces the amount of energy required to maintain highway speeds. The result is the remarkable highway fuel efficiency of the Sonata Hybrid.

TRIM LEVELS

The improved 2013 Sonata Hybrid will offer two different model grades to choose from, Sonata Hybrid and Sonata Hybrid Limited.

The coverage is not transferrable, and does not apply to lease and commercial vehicles or vehicles serviced outside the U.S.

LITHIUM-POLYMER BATTERY TECHNOLOGY

The Sonata Hybrid, with Hyundai’s improved Hybrid Blue Drive technology, has always featured a lithium-polymer battery pack, making Hyundai one of the first automakers in the world to incorporate this remarkably efficient battery technology into production vehicles. Lithium-polymer is the next generation of lithium-ion technology and is ideally suited to automotive applications thanks to a particularly robust and reliable chemistry.

The electrodes in older lithium-ion chemistries expand and contract significantly with the heating and cooling that naturally occurs during charging and discharging.
